Rashid Khalidi on the Holy Land Leaks

Rashid Khalidi, one of the globe’s leading scholars on the modern Middle East, and arguably among the most knowledgeable people in the world on the Israel\Palestine conflict spoke yesterday with Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! about the leaked PA documents that recently have come to light in the Guardian and Al-Jazeera. It is a short interview and certainly worth your time.

From his interview with Amy Goodman yesterday:

…the revelations are quite striking. The most important, I think, is the degree to which not only Palestinian negotiators were forthcoming, but the degree to which the Israelis were unwilling to accept concessions. It seriously casts into doubt the idea that Israel would accept anything but complete capitulation by the Palestinians to absolutely everything they’re demanding on every front. We’ve heard about Jerusalem. There is presumably more to come.

But another thing that comes out very strikingly from these documents is the degree to which the United States is twisting the arm of the Palestinians, the degree to which American diplomats, whether Hillary Rodham Clinton or Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during the previous administration, are unsympathetic to the Palestinians and are in cahoots, in Aaron David Miller’s words, our lawyers for Israel—it’s actually worse than Miller, who was involved in the negotiations for many years, says, from these documents.”

Holy Land Leaks - Secret Docs of PA Revealed!

There goes the neighborhood.

The Guardian is reporting today that they have in their possession some 1600 internal PA documents, NOT FROM WIKI LEAKS, that reveal loads of not so nice things about the so called Israel-Palestine “peace process.”

The paper reports that the juicier documents discuss:

• How Israeli leaders privately asked for some Arab citizens to be transferred to a new Palestinian state.
• The intimate level of covert co-operation between Israeli security forces and the Palestinian Authority.
• The central role of British intelligence in drawing up a secret plan to crush Hamas in the Palestinian territories.
• How Palestinian Authority (PA) leaders were privately tipped off about Israel’s 2008-9 war in Gaza.

I would not be surprised to see Tunisian style blow back in the streets of the West Bank and Gaza in the coming days as a result of this news…which can only lead one to wonder, who leaked the documents to begin with?

Julian Assange you have created a monster!

Elvis Costello cancels Israel Concert

Rock legend and hipster icon, Elvis Costello has canceled his planned concert in Israel giving hope to the Boycott Divest Sanction (BDS) movement within the pro-Palestinian camp in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In a statement on his website, Costello wrote:

Sometimes a silence in music is better than adding to the static and so an end to it.

I cannot imagine receiving another invitation to perform in Israel, which is a matter of regret but I can imagine a better time when I would not be writing this.

We are not puppets. Jerusalem is ours.

Itamar Ben-Gvir, in response to American pressure to restart peace talks between Israel and Palestine. Mr. Ben-Gvir was described by the New York Times to be a member of a right-wing Israeli group that marched through Arab dominated occupied East Jerusalem today.

Here is what this bomb, which does not yet exist, has managed to do: sparked dangerous friction between China and the United States, with Washington selling arms to Taiwan in order to twist China’s arm; turned Europe’s missile defense program into a hostage, dependent on Russian support for sanctions against Iran; triggered a clash between U.S. President Barack Obama, who does not want sanctions against Iran that are too severe, and Congress, which seeks extensive sanctions; stirred a debate within the U.S. administration between those who think Iran should be considered a player that can contribute to stability in Afghanistan and Iraq, and those who oppose that approach; created a rift between Arab states concerned about Iranian hegemony in the region and those who don’t want to be on the same side as Israel against Iran. Therefore, even before manufacturing a single bomb, Iran has become a regional superpower influencing international policy.

Orientalism for Orientalists - Sallah Shabati, the Arab Jew

Good old Sallah Shabati, he’s Jewish, but his Arabness overwhelms him and hence denies him a chance at “modernity.” You will notice that the European Jews in this film clip wear suits and appear confused at Salah’s easterness.

Jon Stewart, Mensch

It continues to amaze me that Jon Stewart, a comedian, has much more journalistic courage than just about ANYONE in broadcast media (save for Sister Amy Goodman)

Just last night, he hosted Dr. Mustafa Barghouti a member of the peaceful Palestinian opposition (and according to many, a non-corrupt leader) and Anna Baltzer a Jewish-American peace activist.

The Daily Show has posted an extended interview with both on their website. You can watch both here on Qizilbash. Be sure not to miss Part 1 where a guy from the audience starts yelling at Barghouti.

You can watch part two after the jump.

صباح الخير سعید ‎בוקר טוב עומר

In the old days of the show, Said and Omer could play together. But now, it seems the puppets have been divided like the countless Saids and Omers in real life.

There is much to say, but the video that came along with this article in the NYTimes has completely depressed me. I wish to avoid sounding like the late Michael Jackson, but the idea of these children living through an armed and unjust conflict is just painful.

Read the article here and watch the pathos inducing video right here.

British Lawyers Seek Arrest of Ehud Barack on War Crimes

The Guardian is reporting today that 16 British lawyers have filed to obtain an international arrest warrant for Ehud Barak, accusing him of committing war crimes in Gaza.

Fat chance. If recent history is any indicator then it would appear that these laws only apply to people of color in former Soviet or American puppet states as well as a couple of people in the Balkans.

Nonetheless, the Guardian reports:

The legal action relates to alleged war crimes and breaches of the Geneva conventions during the war, which was launched by Israel in response to Palestinian rocket attacks and widely criticised internationally. The death toll is disputed, but the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem found that 1,387 Palestinians died, among them 773 people not taking part in hostilities.

Solicitors are asking a district judge at the City of Westminster magistrates court to issue a warrant for Barak’s arrest under the 1988 Criminal Justice Act, which gives courts in England and Wales universal jurisdiction in war crimes cases. The application alleges that Barak has committed offences against the 1957 Geneva conventions.

Barak, who is also deputy prime minister of Israel and leader of the country’s Labour party, could argue that his government office guarantees him “state immunity” from prosecution. But lawyers from two London law firms, Irvine Thanvi Natas and Imran Khan & Partners, believe the warrant that the international criminal court issued in May last year for the arrest of Omar al-Bashir, the president of Sudan, offers a precedent. Bashir is accused of committing war crimes in Darfur.

This would be the shock of 2009 if Barak were dragged away in handcuffs, but don’t hold your breath in anticipation.

Alternative Views: Love the Iranian Bomb!

Ohio State Poltical Scientist and national security-type guy, John Mueller, has just given an interview to the Atlantic Monthly where he insists that the world is worrying just a bit too much about Iran and the nuclear bomb.

Although, I don’t agree with him entirely, I do agree that even if Iran were to get the bomb it would never use it as a first strike weapon.

Although there are all sorts of people who think that Iran’s leadership are super religious nuts who would use it to strike Israel, these people don’t really know Iran, or nuclear strategy for that matter.

Israel (G-d forbid), having a near 40 year lead on Iran in terms of nuclear weapons, could literally reduce Iran to a historical memory in just a moment were Iran be so foolish to take such a move.

If anything, last June’s internal turmoil reveals that the ruling class will do anything in its power to survive.

From the Atlantic interview:

Ok. Lets assume that Iran gets the bomb. What happens?

A bunch of other countries will run around in hysterics for a while, but in the end, probably nothing. What China has done with the bomb has been nothing. It’s just been a huge waste of money. Basically, if Iran gets the bomb, they may find that it’s completely useless, except to stoke their egos for a while.
